Wines of the Week

Each week, we select 2 to 3 items from the previous weekend's tasting bar (one white wine, one red wine) as our WOWs - Wines of the Week. WOWs are available for tasting throughout the week and enjoy the usual tasting bar discounts.

For the weekend's complete tasting list, visit the Newsletter page. The following wines will be the WOWs for November 20-23.

Hugues Beaulieu 2005 Picpoul de Pinet Coteaux du Languedoc - $8.99
Languedoc, France

This is this wine's second appearance on the tasting bar since September. Picpoul Blanc (also spelled Piquepoul Blanc) is one of the lesser-known Rh?ne varietals, and is one of the thirteen permitted varietals in Ch?teauneuf-du-Pape, where it is used primarily as a blending component to take advantage of its acidity. Literally translating to "lip stinger," Picpoul Blanc produces wines known in France for their bright acidity, minerality, and clean lemony flavor. The Beaulieu got 87 points from Wine Spectator, who offer this description: "Fresh and crisp, with citrus, apple and Asian pear flavors. Well-balanced and structured, with hints of spice on the finish. Fine match for shellfish." If you're looking for an affordable, dryer style of white for your Thanksgiving table, this is it.
Special Wine of the Week prices starting Friday at 4 pm: 1-5 bottles $8.54 each; 6-11 bottles $8.09 each; 12 bottles or more $7.64 each
Chapel Hill Winery 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon - $15.99
McLaren Vale, Australia
Robert Parker 88 points

This terrific, big Cab will truly knock your socks off. The fruit extraction is huge and concentrated, and the tannins are supple. If you're looking for something bold for Turkey Day, look no further.
